A bipartisan consensus is forming around at least one issue: battling hunger among college students.
On March 13, Reps. Judy Chu (Calif.) and Roger Marshall (Kan.) introduced the Campus Hunger Reduction Act of 2019. The bill makes colleges and universities eligible for grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Community Food Projects program.
Damiana Dendy, coordinator of our national Zero Hunger campaign, endorsed the bill, saying, “No student should go hungry in our world of abundance. This bill is part of the solution to hunger because it can support programs that get resources that would otherwise be wasted to those who need them.”
One in 5 U.S. college students report not having enough food on a regular basis. One in 10 community college students report going at least an entire day without eating. RIPIRG’s Zero Hunger campaign is recruiting campus administrations to make public commitments to achieving zero hunger by cutting waste.
